Default Day on Loch Bhac

My mate and I like to get up there at least once a season....nice place to be,very peacefull and pretty steady fishing.Nice wee rainbows 1lb 4ozs to 1lb 12ozs on average, just the right size for that water type....no need for any silly lumps.

It turned out to be totally cloudless with long flat spells or a light and variable (very) breeze at best.Very difficult to set up any kind of coverage plan of the water as the breeze would never be in the same direction for any more than five minutes when it did give us a wee puff.

There was only the occasional oncer showing every now and then but we both decided to grind it out with dries. It was fairly slow going but if you could get the flies in front of a riser nicely, they were keen to take them.
I chose black flies because firstly, black stands out well in the stark bright light and secondly Bhac looks like one of those waters where the fish will see a fair amount of terrestrials on the menu.Having said that the water surface was very clean and the only fly that seemed to be around were very small buzzers.

A Hot One

I found that most of the fish were coming to a bulky size 12 bibio hopper on the dropper rather than the slim raider style emerger on the tail.I wondered if an even bigger fly on the cast would increase the number of out the blue chances because up untill this point everything we had caught had to be covered....which is what ye want of course but it was just a wee bit slow.I stuck on a B-400 size 10 monstrosity which is basically a cdc winged stimulator. This worked a treat in that more fish were now coming blind to the cast and the pace picked up a bit.

Very pleasant in the sunshine during the day but the temperature plummeted in the evening due to the big open sky.Despite the cold there was a cracking rise which lasted a good hour or so before it was time to pack in......cracking wee loch well worth a visit.

Jim,
Beautiful place and really fantastic photographs. Those fish also look perfect. Just looks like time standing still. You have really captured a great atmosphere with that selection of pictures. Brilliant.

Glad you had a nice day, it is a nice place. Did the Osprey visit? Me I blanked other than a wee Bandie but I came away with the thought that it should have been nurtured by the angling club as a Brown Trout only water & not rely on stocked Rainbows to give some sport on occasion. There are more than enough stocked waters to go around as it is I feel.

Aye I know what you mean Highlander,Ive only been visiting the place for the past few seasons but I suspect it was never a particularly prolific brown trout loch before the club introduced rainbows, though I could be wrong.
We did catch a couple of brownies around the 10 to 12ozs mark and they were the picture of health.

At least the club seem savvy enough to stock with sensibly sized fish in sensible numbers,so they should have a fair chance of at least maintaining their weight. The fishing felt as well balanced and natural as you could hope for on a stocked fishery. The surroundings and the fact that there are only two boats certainly go a long way in helping to acheive that impression.

We never saw the Osprey but twice saw a Goshawk trying a low level surprise attack on the tufted ducks which were only yards in front of us out on the water ..... The tufties saw him coming at the last minute and crash dived to escape......brilliant thing to see at such close quarters.

Thanks FF...the fish I'm holding up was a typical example of the fish we were getting but we had a number of others that had obviously been in the loch at least since the start of the season if not since last year...they were in absolute mint nick.
Never really got a good shot of one because of one thing or another.....I dont like to mess them around to much just for the sake of a snap.If they are too full of beans and not sitting still to get their photo taken,I tend just to slip them back quickly.....

In a world of deformed and force fed rainbows, can I just say thats the best picture of a rainbow I've ever seen. Pretty as a picture, great markings, fin perfect, and radiating good health. nice one!!!
