cracking John. Never tired looking at quality fish. I assume it put up a good account of itself, seeing as it has a full set of fins and one of those strange square tail things the Carron rainbows have.

Yes, Wullie, the fish, at somewhere between three and four pounds, gave good sport, taken on a Diawl Bach from the shore fished on a #6 floating line. It was returned to fight another day. I cannot understand how any angler would be dissatisfied with such a fish, yet it would seem that there is an almost insatiable demand, at Carron and elsewhere, for ever bigger fish, an unfortunate trend which cannot be good for a fishery or the wider environment. That the presence of a tail and fins on a stocked fish is still worthy of comment is surely a very sad reflection on our angling culture.

I should perhaps add that the few rainbow trout I have caught at Carron have all been in prime condition, virtually indistinguishable from the real thing, an example of which is posted below (not taken by me I am sorry to say). Happily, it would seem that the Carron Valley management, unlike some others, see tails and fins as essential components rather than optional extras.

The real thing ....a Lake Erie steelhead taken by Bob Schoeller on a needle tube
