Yes, Wullie, the fish, at somewhere between three and four pounds, gave good sport, taken on a Diawl Bach from the shore fished on a #6 floating line. It was returned to fight another day. I cannot understand how any angler would be dissatisfied with such a fish, yet it would seem that there is an almost insatiable demand, at Carron and elsewhere, for ever bigger fish, an unfortunate trend which cannot be good for a fishery or the wider environment. That the presence of a tail and fins on a stocked fish is still worthy of comment is surely a very sad reflection on our angling culture.
I should perhaps add that the few rainbow trout I have caught at Carron have all been in prime condition, virtually indistinguishable from the real thing, an example of which is posted below (not taken by me I am sorry to say). Happily, it would seem that the Carron Valley management, unlike some others, see tails and fins as essential components rather than optional extras.
