Default Ebbw, Rhymney & Taff

With a day off work today, and with good weather, I was faced with the dilema of deciding where to go.....Ebbw, Rhymney or Taff???
I knew I had work the rest of this week, then Sat I'm in Ireland with the Youth Team till the following Sat. So for almost 2 weeks, I'd be away from the rivers!
It was important that I made the right decision.
And so I thought.........Why not fill my boots, and do all three....So I did!
And here are some of the results:

Ebbw:

My thoughts exactly Mike.

If it's OK Bushy I'll forward this picture to the EA to see what their view is, it's a perfect illustration of something a few of us have been commenting on for a while.
I'd imagine this is a sewage related issue but that's by no means certain given the amount of industry along the valley.

One polluter, a timber product manufacturer at the top end of the Rhymney is continually leaking preservative into the river killing all the invertebrates for a long way down stream. This continues as the producer claims they would have to close if the remedial work was undertaken. I wonder how many others are using this argument in job strapped Wales

I will also get on to them about this. when I last fished the rhymney in june it was very milky. I had a phone number and contact info for someone in the cardiff office - cannot seem to find where I've put the info though. might have gotten it from you DB?

I'll PM you the contact details for the area Fisheries Technical Team Leader Mike.
Here's another pretty picture of the Taff taken yesterday evening after someone phoned me to let me know about yet another pollution incident.

I'm really fed up with Welsh Water, it's the fifth time I've contacted them regarding this drainage system. The Environment Agency were equally useless, the requested feedback never arrived - as per usual. It took four hours for Welsh Water to arrive despite the detailed instructions I gave them of the location. No one from the EA turned up. Hopeless.

If members of the Ffynnon Taf anglers would be kind enough to let me and the EA know if they see any more pollution at the footbridge either from the overhead sewage pipes fixed to the bridge or from the culvert immediately beneath it I can usually get up fairly quickly to document the problem. I'm going to put a web page together which I hope may shame Welsh water to get a final fix for this problem.

diawl bach,

Your very welcome to use the pic hope it'll be of some use.
I'm also a member of Fynnon Taff, and will keep an eye on the sewer pipe you are referring to, and keep you, and the E.A. informed on progress (or lack of).
I haven't fished down there since Jan / Feb, but I thought that as they were working on the bridge, they would be repairng the pipe at the same time.

I will stop off there tomorrow, or Fri, and take a look........But your pics prove there is a huge problem all around the bridge......Bushy.

Thanks Bushy, I had a look today and it is sorted. It was a sewage sub station that flipped this time, the overhead pipes are fixed for the time being.

Takes the shine off of Cardiff Bay doesn't it!

Yes, also a member of FT.

I was assured by the EA last autumn that they were fixing the pipe in question, and that it was just water in the pipes - not effluent. it does seem to be sorted. I went up and had a look at it in June.

Those photos are shocking DB. Not least because I normally wade near that spot. Welsh water should be ashamed. unfortunately, as they are a 'monopoly' they are unlikely to be directly responsive to the consumer. they may be more responsive to scrutiny from regulatory agencies. although the EA's track record kind of sucks and fines tend to be negotiated down to a level so low one wonders if they even offset the prosecution costs.

I think we need to get a bit more proactive here. Get more people complaining. Perhaps we could also ask those members of this forum who have access to Taff fishing club email lists to send a link to this page to their members asking them to complain?

The easiest way to do the website colin would be to make a blog where local residents and fishermen could easily comment. That could be put up fairly quickly.

I will also try to find out if there are any relevent local RCT council and WAG members who could be contacted.

you could contact the ACA to see if they can bring a prosecution on the basis that this is damaginf to the fishery. If the Ea won't do something then do it off the back of your club. I think this is disgusting and sums up the water authorities and the EA. The EA is a toothless ***** of an organisation that is more part of the problem than part of the solution. We need some statutory body that will make polluters put right the damage and incentivise them not to pollute in the first place. At the moment pollution and fines are considered to be art of the cost of doing biusiness in this area.
