Default Trout or Grayling?

Was over at the sexyloops website. It seems that they have a species of fish in Herzegovina that has the markings and dorsal fin of a brown trout, but the mouth shape of a grayling. I was fascinated by this, thought some of you guys might find it interesting too.

Hope the links work:

Looks a bit like a Mongolian Lenok trout. Beautiful!

cheers

Is it not called a long mouth trout? Only found in the one river?

Default Softmouth trout

It's a softmouth trout

I believe they have now been given a new Genus: Salmothymus obtusirostris.

PiB - reading the text on your link and it looks like the taxonomy is again in question with the correct classification being suggested as 'salmo' and no longer 'salmothymus'...

It's a bit like politics innit? U-turn follows U-turn follows...

Confusing isn't it.

All the scientists trying to out do one another, now they have DNA testing.

Whatever - it's an unique, and interesting, species at least.
There is a 'golden' softmouth variety in the neighbouring Vrljika.

The Russians now use Parasalmo mykiss for the Rainbow trout; so the taxonomy of the trout world rarely stands still.
