Exclamation Bokeh!

Picked up a shot of a terrestrial today: a little hoverfly sitting on some gorse by the riverbank.

Looked pretty good on the camera screen. Looked better when I downloaded it.

Thanks Lighthouse; I was quite pleased with it myself.

Excellent, love the way you clearly see through the wings to the body stripes below. Great photograph.

Thanks both.

Viking,

Hand -held, lit by a single flashgun ( which packed in shortly after I'll have to buy a new one) on a bracket. 100mm macro lens. One heavily flowered coconut-smelling Gorse bush.

Tripod not an option -everything was pretty active in the sun.

No - a standard flashgun off-camera above the lens, on a bracket.

Tell-tale shadows here (still looks OK though)on an aphid, also from yesterday:

I recently replaced my Minolta Dynax 7D with a Sony Alpha 700. It's kind of an updated version of the same camera, four years on. I'll be holding on to the old camera as a backup though.

It's worth mentioning that the pictures would look much the same with any digital SLR, 90-100mm macro lens and the same techniques though. You can't tell anything much from a compressed resized JPEG.

Even fancy cameras don't go out and take your pictures for you.
