Lo All,
I thought I would post a few pics from my recent trip to the Green river/ Flaming Gorge area in northeast Utah. It is a beautiful place and the fishing was absolutely fantastic.
As you can see, the green river lives up to its name:
It is a big river. Here's a shot looking down at the takeout point at 'little hole' - something of a misnomer, but a great place to fish.
We had good midge and BWO hatches throughout the week. Sometimes there were so many naturals on the water that it became next to impossible to get a strike. Too much competition. We spent a lot of time changing flies/ patterns and trying to match each stage of the hatch. Thankfully, with the water so clear we were able to see when the trout were taking nymphs, emergers, or duns.
There is an absolutely stunning amount of fish in the tailwaters below the flaming gorge dam. The average size of the fish we caught was between 16-20 inches. You wouldn't want to fish anything below a 4 weight here unless you have very light tippet and you can afford to pop off a lot of flies. Some of the bigger fish tended to cruise the shallows next to the banks where there was also less competition from the naturals. Brilliant! I estimate this guy was about 20 inches:
We caught mostly browns on the Green although there were some very feisty rainbows in there that would give your drag a workout.
It was damned cold most days. Temperatures hovered around 0 and the tips of our fingers got frostbitten. The fish and bugs didn't seem to mind, but we had to bundle up so heavily we felt like spacemen. We hardly noticed - the fishing really was that good.
On the very last day, the temperature rose dramatically and we were able to truly enjoy the glorious desert sunshine:
