Default green river utah trip 2008

Lo All,

I thought I would post a few pics from my recent trip to the Green river/ Flaming Gorge area in northeast Utah. It is a beautiful place and the fishing was absolutely fantastic.

As you can see, the green river lives up to its name:

It is a big river. Here's a shot looking down at the takeout point at 'little hole' - something of a misnomer, but a great place to fish.

We had good midge and BWO hatches throughout the week. Sometimes there were so many naturals on the water that it became next to impossible to get a strike. Too much competition. We spent a lot of time changing flies/ patterns and trying to match each stage of the hatch. Thankfully, with the water so clear we were able to see when the trout were taking nymphs, emergers, or duns.

There is an absolutely stunning amount of fish in the tailwaters below the flaming gorge dam. The average size of the fish we caught was between 16-20 inches. You wouldn't want to fish anything below a 4 weight here unless you have very light tippet and you can afford to pop off a lot of flies. Some of the bigger fish tended to cruise the shallows next to the banks where there was also less competition from the naturals. Brilliant! I estimate this guy was about 20 inches:

We caught mostly browns on the Green although there were some very feisty rainbows in there that would give your drag a workout.

It was damned cold most days. Temperatures hovered around 0 and the tips of our fingers got frostbitten. The fish and bugs didn't seem to mind, but we had to bundle up so heavily we felt like spacemen. We hardly noticed - the fishing really was that good.

On the very last day, the temperature rose dramatically and we were able to truly enjoy the glorious desert sunshine:

Default POST 2 - spring creek rainbows

On two days we fished a small spring creek thanks to a very generous tip from a local fly shop owner ('Bigfoot fly shop' in Vernal UT - I highly recommend them). I am sworn not to reveal the name of the creek, but if any of you are planning a trip to the area, I can give you some details via Private Message. The creek was located in a stunningly beautiful red rocks canyon.

I must admit than when we showed up, we were a bit concerned that we had been sent on wild goose chase. The creek wasn't very big, although there were some tempting looking pockets and riffles:

It didn't take us long to realise that the tip was good - as well as the advice to fish nothing less than 4x and a 5 weight rod. The creek was filled with good size rainbows that put up quite an account of themselves, despite their eagerness to take a sz 10 copper john. The only advantage we had was that the fish tended to run upstream or to stay in the deep pockets:

When the big ones DID run downstream, a frantic scramble/ fall downriver would ensue:

Thankfully, there were good friends around to help land the fish. We caught several bows over 20 inches and some like this one that weren't quite that long, but made up for their length in girth and muscle:

Well, thats all folks. Hope you enjoyed them.

Default Wow!

Hi Mike

Thanks for sharing that with us, I enjoyed it - although I have to admit I'm a little jealous. You must have a wonderful wife to keep you from that .
Let me know if you fancy another trip up during Mayfly season, and we'll pick a different venue. Keep checking the blog to see if theres anything you fancy.

Mick

The wife is very understanding...otherwise I probably wouldn't be married anymore.

It also helps that this is an annual spring trip that has been going on since before I was married. And I also play the 'I'm missing the states' card...

Mick, I may just take you up on that very tempting and generous offer. Might have to wait till autumn again though. Also, if you ever want to fish one of our local chalk streams for little wild brownies, let me know.

Brilliant report Mike and fantastic photographs. I remember visiting a red canyon in Utah but it may not be the same one. Certainly a place that has a stunning natural beauty unlike anything within our own shores.

Thank you.
