Default First Trout of the Season

Hi Folks,

Having a few days off for easter with the local rivers yet to open I decided on Good Friday to travel up to Cumbria and the River Eden at Kirkby Stephen where the trout season starts a little earlier than here in Yorkshire.

It was cold and windy with intermittent bouts of sunshine, hail and snow! I've not fished the river there before but it appeared to me to be quite low and running very clear.

I fished from 12 O'clock untill half past three with not a sign of a fish, and only saw 2 LDO's in three and a half hours of fishing. I was fishing small nymphs upstream but I'm sure I would have done better with some heavy bugs on a short line but having done this for the last few months I really wanted to fish a different method. As the cold was starting to bite and I was beginning to think about a hot shower my line tip took a little tell tale jerk upstream and I was into my first fish of the season!

19 inches of beautiful eden brown trout, I decided that I had little chance of bettering that so headed off for a shower and a pint.

Here's where it came from a beautiful river in a beautiful part of the country, I shall be back!

Tightlines,

Mick Pogson.

Well done Mickey, what a belter, I live approx 1.5 miles from the Eden and as a member of Penrith AA have lots to go at but unlike you I have been sitting at home thinking it was too cold, now you have really made me think again.
Tight lines. (Well you already know that)

Very nice. I've just joined a club that has exchange tickets with Kirkby Stephen (and with Penrith AA too actually) and that's whet my appetite just nicely.

I only got out for the trout yesterday (sat) and only managed an hour. This one was 43 cm and took a F fly (dry) from the Earn. Still cold but fish usually rising in the afternoon.
After this the hatch died as the rain and wind came on.
