Thought I'd do a wee report on my opening wkend at Loch Earn.
My Dad and I have never done that well on this loch until the end of April so wasn't expecting much action-but I couldnt wait to get out there and get over some of my favourite drifts.
So early on saturday morning we got the boat and the mountains of gear packed and were off.
While setting up the weather was pretty chilly with an easterly wnd but it was quite sunny so ok conditions.
tackling up
We spent the first half of the day drifting along the north shore, working our way up the loch towards St. Fillans in the east. I was on the HiD with mini lures and wets, my dad on the Di3 with similar flies. We didnt get a touch and the fish finder was showing up the occasional fish down around the 70ft mark - possibly char. Eventually we made our way back towards Lochearnhead and made some drifts through Edinample bay. Just at the end of our drift as I cast in amoungst some huge boulders a fish grabbed hold of my red holo Cormorant and i thought id at last got my 1st brownie of the '08 season-but it turned out to be a rainbow escapee around 1lb-welcome none the less.
That was it for the day.
On the sunday we eventually decided to head back out for more punishment!
Same lines and flies were put on and we headed out to some different areas of the loch. Still no fish to were willing so we headed back in desparation to were I'd caught the fish the day before (we'd seen some guys spinning taking fish from the same area too). The wind (now a north easterly) allowed some nice drifts onto the shore and as we drifted onto the bouldery shore I got an arm-wrenching take and was into good fish on a Doobry. As it threw itself out of the I saw it was a nice brownie-at last!!
This fish took in exactly the same spot as the rainbow the day before. The rest of the day saw us thrashing the water to a froth for no return! Ah well its the fishing not the catching. Had a great weekend and canny wait till the weather warms up and the flies get on the go......
heres some pics of loch earn scenery.

Cheers,
