Default River Liffey brownies

Some nice fish of the Liffey this year before all the rain ruined it. These are a result after stocking our club waters 4 years ago with fingerlings.

Murtol,
Lucan anglers club water, but im going to start working on the Palmerstown end, and get the mill race sorted for salmon bed's.needs a bit of work though!
Good Salmon numbers on the clock at Island bridge (1000)until the flood of rain late may, then they just passed the the counter. So you can Imagine whats there.
Also exellent seatrout fishing had.

Cracking looking fish, well done.

Just out of interest, how do you know they are the result of your fingerling stockings? Do you dye mark or fin clip? Be interested to know because our local river are thinking about stocking and marking stocked fish so that we can differentiate between wild and stocked fish.

Of course after typing this I have just realised that it will be difficult to mark fingerlings as opposed to larger stock fish - still interested to know how you differentiate.

Dunbar,
Good question, and one that was brought forward at a commitee meeting, but the awnser was simple, the state of the river and the numbers of fish actually being caught on the rod was fairly low and the actual sighting of summer time feeders was prety much the same and it just got better and better, hit and miss i suppose.Clipping the fin was'nt going to be an option as the farm was'nt going to do it, and you can imagine when the truck arrived and us standing around with clippers. So in they went with crossed fingers in a few feeder streams, which had to be closely monitered for polution dump's, our council are good at that over here.
So i would say go for it, and as trout tend to stay in their own patch it just works. Not great monitoring i do admit.
Cheers,
dave

Dave, that is one hell of a nice looking trout, just beautiful. With regard to clipping, I dont like the practice as it disfigures the fish. Dye marking works well for our club but not sure how it would work with fingerlings as it will eventually wear off. I beleive there is some kind of long lasting tag that you can apply - I think the GCT use this approach.

The Trout in the top picture was caught on a Murum Fly, as used on the murum in sweden . A very easy fly to tie, and to be used when the stikleback or minnows are present in the river, the tying is.

Hook; 10 B175
Tail: Black marabou, a good pinch
Rib: Fine silver wire
Body: Black chanille
Hackle: Black Metz cock palmered. (or any GOOD quality hackle)

Fish at the top of the pools, and swing in to the holding area's,where the big lads are.

Try it out in different sizes, good fly for the river fishermans fly box.
