Default Big River Aire Brown Trout

Yesterday I typed in "Brown Trout River Aire" in Google. And I found a photo or two of a 30" Brown Trout which was caught at Kildwick.

The link is : http://www.mrkd.co.uk/website/galler...ck_may_06.html

I emailed the person who caught it and he was fishing for pike with mackeral.

Do you believe this guy that it is 30" long???

Not unless that is a very big 50 cl water bottle! It certainly is a good fish but looks a bit short of 30" to me.

It does not have the look of a sea trout to me either.

I would say its 30in or damn close as those forceps are the 12in ones sold to pike anglers, and 30in is not outlandishly big, the trout looks about 8/9lb and seems to be in good condition. I cant believe how he caught it, I have never heard of a trout taking a sea bait, and they are used a lot on the Irish loughs for pike, methinks he used something else and wont say

I'd say 5 or 6 pounds.

This is the reply I got from him.

"Isn't that a nice trout !!! I was pike fishing using mackerel tale as dead bait and also had a ledger rod out which I was using swopping between sweet corn and bread hoping to get the chud interested. I had cast the dead bait into the shallow water to the right of the first arch. After about 20 minutes I noticed the float bob and at first thought it was just the bait rolling on the bottom but when it did it a 2nd time and then started to bob off towards the faster flowing water, I struck into it and it shot off into the deep water, I thought it was a chum at first with the speed it went off and it wasn't until I brought it into the net that I noticed the spots down it's side that I knew it was a trout and was well chuffed when I got it onto the bank and saw the size of it. I was fishing alone so could not get any of those posey photos but the forceps that are laid in front of it are 12" long that I use for unhooking pike, that is how I know the rough length at 30" but really wish I had taken the scales on that day."

rookstorm: No this is not a sea trout. There are no migratory fish in the River Aire.

My dad says that there used to be some large brown trout in the Aire years ago, but only a few people catch them.
The only large fish that I have caught this river, was a lovely trout of 1 1/2 lb which had just been stocked by Bradford City AA.

I think more likely to be a mis-spelling of chub.

there are some big trout in the aire. ive had them to 3 1/2 lbs myself, when i use to spin for them my mate had a cracker out at 5lbs, there definately in there. weve seen some clonking fish jump and chase minnows caught on float gear.

there not necessarily in the deep water either

i was talking to a guy at raygill who fishes for the pike there in winter. any deadbait he tried got picked up by monster stockies, the only way they could stop catching trout was by permission of the owner to use a trout of a pound or so.
