Default Icelandic Brown Trout and Char

Here are some pics of fish we caught in Iceland in June - all beautiful but very variable

This is a typical fish from a shallow lake where Browns are the most abundant species all are finely spotted and a lovely yellow colour - some more yellow than this

This fish and the next one are both from a deep water lake where Char are predominant. This next fish is typical for this lake very silvery - almost like a seatrout.Click the image to open in full size.

This is an average sized Char - we caught them upto 4lbs plus - they too vary in colour quite a bit - usually in depth of the orange under belly.

All in all lovely wild fish - caught when we went on our annual trip with my Icelandic friend Skuli Kristinsson

I agree, the second brown trout is fantastic. Must have been a good trip.

Tups,
if you want to fish for Artic Char, St. Mary's Loch in the Scottish Borders has some because of it's depth.

is trout fishing very expensive over there? I ask because the salmon fishing seems to be truly extortionate! Maybe the trout fishing is more accessable? Those trout are stunning.

Nice pics. Considering Iceland for my 40th....I hear it costs an arm and a leg for food and booze?

Tupps,

There are charr in Llanberis North Wales; maybe a bit nearer for you?

Much prettier than the Icelandic pic - sorry Cookshill, the wild brown pics were quite superb.
The Welsh call them 'torgoch'; this means 'red-belly', quite apt when you see one. Every fin tipped in black, white, and red.
Easy to catch in August. Set out for the lake middle, must be crack of dawn: Paternostered maggots dangled over the edge of a dinghy, depth set at between 10 - 11 metres.

Not fly-fishing I know; but the forum has expanded recently. Perhaps this is: Welsh tradition more than Classic coarse .

Go stand in the corner PiB! Maggots indeed!

The Artic Char in St. Mary's can be caught on a DI7 or HiDi with normal wet flies, one of the Selkirk AA members used to fish for them and they have popped up in competitions before.
