Some pictures from a work trip last week to the Uists, Harris and Skye. When I say work trip, of course I had a couple of rods in the back of the car and made time for a few casts here and there. The weather was not that great and so the pics are a bit dull, but you get some idea of the scenery.

Some nice pictures there. I see that the sun was shining in Skye, which doesn't happen very often! It is hard to beat the scenery on the west side of Harris, and the fishing is pretty good as well.

The picture of the basking shark in the bay at Huisinish reminds me of a day when I was swimming in that bay. I was swimming along and looked up to see what I thought was a log about ten feet away. A second look revealed that it was a basking shark a heading straight for me. My first reaction was "Jaws" and I beat a hasty retreat. However it was a nice experience being so close and watching it swim up and down the beach.

Thanks, all, for the kind comments. The scenery in the Western Isles, especially the west side of Harris, really is outstanding and makes it easy to take a good picture, providing it is not tipping down. The fishing also would make it worth the trip, even without the scenery. There are countless trout lochs and also some summer salmon/grilse fishing.

Speers, you are right that the ferry prices are a bit steep. Flying is an option, but not really any cheaper, unless you get a special deal and you don't need to hire a car. Anyway I have an attachment to the CalMac breakfast fry-up. I did a round trip

Oban - Lochboisdale - 5hrs - remember the Stugeron, the Minch can be rough
Berneray - Leverburgh - just a short 1 hour hop
Tarbert - Uig - about 2.5 hours

That cost, I think, £188 for car and one passenger. There is a good chance of spotting cetaceans from the boats, or alternatively you can join the locals and get ****** in the bar, sometimes with live music.

Scottpix, I like that pic too. It reminds me of when I used to (badly) do some watercolour painting. I used to try to get that deepening tone of colour as you move from the background to foreground with each line of hills, but never really managing to get it to look convincing. .

Oh no quick... take this marvelous photos off this forum or everyone will remember what a fly fishermans paridise we have on our British doorstep!

Thanks so much for sharing these great pictures with us. I'm going up there in August for some sea trouting (spectacular sport when you hit it right).

Did you catch any good fish?? Not that it really matters that much when it is so beautiful!

Robbie
