Default Salmon or sea trout???? that is the question.....

Hi everyone,

Can someone please tell me if the fish in the centre of the picture is a sea trout or a salmon?

Click the image to open in full size.

I believe the photo was taken in a fish mongers somewhere (hence the net markings) but I am not sure.

Many thanks,

R

From the position of the maxillary in relation to the eye it seems that it extends beyond a line drawn vertically from the rear of the eye so I would say sea trout.

I thought it was a salmon, but I could be wrong. (But I don't think so!)

Very hard to tell apart sometimes without doing a scale count etc! etc!.

Going off the pic though....I'd say it was a Salmon.

I'd say salmon too. For a sea trout I'd expect to see the rear edge of the eye further forward of a vertical line from the end of the maxillary and in general - that would be a very pointy headed seatrout!

Salmon I think. This might help.

When looking ast the position of the eye relative to the maxillary you have to take into account that the mouth is open in the photo and when closed the maxillary will be a little further behind the eye - so sea trout.

Also, given that there is a foil "chinese takeaway" container that appears to be under the fish, if it were a standard size and the fish was a salmon it would be tiny.
