Default Entomoligists please

Can someone please tell me what this is? Its about 1 inch long and quite thick bodied, Bigger than anything ive ever seen.

Definitely a mayfly dun. Did you see it at Hillend? It's the only mayfly water in this neck of the Buckfast as far as I know.

Seen lots of them on the river devon in clackmannanshire! Very Very surprised as thats what i thought it was but didnt think they were anywhere near here!

I'm really surpised too. Never seen one on a Scottish river, only lochs (and mainly Sutherland at that).

Never had anything that big, Never seen anything that size on the river before. Used a size 14 iron dun i had, quite a few fish where interested in that, managed to take a couple. Mainly small fish in the river though. Am i right in sayin you only get mayfly on very clean water?

No joy - better get tying!

The nymphs need a silty/ sandy substrate, I understand. They tend to like more fertile sites.

Just up from the pool i seen them in is very sandy. Usually all i see in there though is cased caddis. Interesting! What patterns would you suggest?

Just think of them as big olives and use about a 12. I'm sure the fish don't give a toss as long as they are food.
