Default Daft and suicidal but hopeful and happy.

Nothing went particularly wrong today but i was in a foul mood.At half passed seven tonight she said "Why dont you go fishing?"
"But its blowing a gale, pouring down and its nearly dark."
"Thats never stopped you before."
So like **** off a shovel i was out the house thrashing the car down to the river. 30 minis later with the river about to bust its banks i sighed as the first step confirmed my fears, it was not water but chocolate i was wading into. After one cast i had to ditch the 4 weight and go back up to the car to set up the 6 and put my life jacket on. My hand hovered over the stocky box with its woolly buggers but i thought to myself that that would be cheating. They stayed were they belong.
The wind was hellish, so i stopped for a ciggie and to take stock. Then like little yellow sail boats they started drifting past, a hatch in the rain and wind? They just kept coming and coming but nothing moved for them. The water i was in was too fast so i moved up to a stretch i dont fish as its a bit like a canal, flat and slow but under some trees i was convinced i saw a couple of slashes. Right enough there were fish feeding on the Duns.
Five fly changes , two leader set ups and someone from above smiling down at me resulted in five lost fish and this wild beauty of 1lbs.

Nice one - what was hatching? Was it yellow sallies, mayflies? It's always a bonus when you manage a fish or two in unlikely conditions. I was out myself for a few casts on the Whiteadder river this afternoon and got a couple of nice ones despite it blowing half a gale.

I had exactly the same experience on the Blythe a few days ago.....it all looked hopeless and suddenly I heard that magical "plop".

Had a fantastic hour or so but lost most of them in the current or just missed takes.

That's another lovely fish, by the way. As you know, this was one of my recent results on a greased up French partridge:

Superb.

There is nothing like a hour on the river to get you out of a bad mood.

Tell the wife she is a diamond.
