Default The New Salty Beast

With the old man scaling down from his 26 footer, thought I'd take advantage of the exchange rate and invest with the old boy in a 17 foot dory back in Kiwi land. Metal hull, beamy, central console, casting platform and 4 stroke 60hp.

Perfect beast for chasing the lunker kahawai and kingfish in the surf as they tear into the schools of bait fish covered with a deciever stripped in at smoking pace. It's pretty exhilerating... pitty I'll only see the bloody thing once a year, still nice to dream about in the winter months here.

Best fighting fish on the planet pound for pound. Torpedo body like a tuna, searing runs like a bone fish and the erobatics of a searun rainbow, and best of all plentiful.

J,

Your on the money about the kahawai. I think they are one of the best fly targets on the planet. Casting at schools of fish busting up on the surface is something else. I was fishing out of Tauranga in Feb to schools of fish the size of a football pitch

....but then again the kingfish is something else!!!

Hey Mat,

Beautiful Kingy by the way! Keep those photties coming!!
I think kahawai and kingfish swff in the warmer months with the massive shoals of pilchard swarming along the west and east coast is one of the best kept secrets in Fly fishing. Funny enouph kahawai are overlooked by alot of local anglers in search of snapper etc...

I was born and live on the west coast of the North Island on the Manakau Harbour, where Kahawai are present all year round.

Far too many Salt water fly men/woman are so absorbed with name dropping bone fish and giant travelly locations, rod and clothing labels and the price they had to auction their grannies off to get there, they are totally ingorant to some of the more accessable SWFF in the pacific. They can have your bone fish and be blissfully unaware for all I care.

Anymore photos Mat?

Really. I lived in onehunga until very recently. I love bones and GT's as well but kingies and kahawai really are special. The NZ fishery is absolutely outstanding. I'm originally from oz and was blown away by the fishery in NZ. A mate of mine recently landed a kingie of 24.5kg on fly. That is some feat.

More pics. How about a Mako on fly!!

Know onehunga, used to work over that way, I'm from Titirangi in West Auckland. That's some shark... was that up in the Bay of Islands?

What the hell made you leave all that for Essex?

Mat it's always for love... curse these UK woman steeling good honest southern hemisphere blokes, taking them away from prime fishing, good weather and a decent drinking culture. Condemned to a land of fog, rain and bloody tea addicts.

Congratulations for July.

Talking

The downfall of many a good man.

I 'm excited by fishing some new water up here, but I will also make the annual pilgramige back to NZ to get my kingie fix.
