Great work.

You should try and get the council involved re the littering.

Get a few tramps dumping stuff prosecuted and erect a few signs to that effect in problem areas.

Only takes a few in court, for word to get around.

Talking A cash dispenser

I know most rivers and lochs suffer with litter ,but that is some amount! A cash dispenser (empty I presume) I bet the police would have been interested in that,or maybe the bank should get charged for dumping it there!!!!

Well done to all your efforts down there.

It's fantastic to see the river in such beautiful condition after all your efforts.

I was born and lived until I was ten in Beddington, Surrey and for those who don't know, on the banks on the Wandle. In those days it was full of shopping trolleys, bikes and general litter, though catching three spined sticklebacks from th Wandles spurred me into fishing I reckon.

Also got the link to friends of beddington park from your website. Geez the photos bring back some fond memories....

Just want to say well done, and the end result does all of you guys justice

Yup,a long way from the bad old days of foam and stinking water.I used to live fairly close to the Wandle and it wasn't a pretty sight.Just a shame that people still use our rivers(or anywhere else for that matter)as dumping grounds for their unwanted junk

We're working on it, RRW35

In fact, the 20-yard pile of cr*p you can see in Gill's October report came from what I regard as one of the very worst stretches of the river. There's a travellers' camp on one side, with a low-railed bridge over the Wandle as the only access, so the river is an easy target for everyone from travellers to fly-tippers who use the travellers as cover.

About a year ago, I understand that Wandsworth Council tried putting up security cameras to cover the bridge:

No. 1 - on an adjacent lamp-post
No. 2 - on the side of a nearby house
No. 3 - in a parked car (Spooks-stylie)

with the following entertaining results:

No. 1 - got shot out
No. 2 - the owners of the house got a "visit" with warnings to take the camera down - or else
No. 3 - the car got trashed with baseball bats, then finished off with a petrol bomb

Personally, I'm all in favour of 10-foot military-industrial chainlink fencing across this particular bridge, but some people think that might spoil the view...

In the meantime, keep an eye out for Charles R-W's "Accidental Angler" next Sunday 3rd. If it didn't hit the cutting-room floor, there's a good chance you'll see him helping us haul out a couple of motorbikes from precisely this stretch!
