We're working on it, RRW35
In fact, the 20-yard pile of cr*p you can see in Gill's October report came from what I regard as one of the very worst stretches of the river. There's a travellers' camp on one side, with a low-railed bridge over the Wandle as the only access, so the river is an easy target for everyone from travellers to fly-tippers who use the travellers as cover.
About a year ago, I understand that Wandsworth Council tried putting up security cameras to cover the bridge:
No. 1 - on an adjacent lamp-post
No. 2 - on the side of a nearby house
No. 3 - in a parked car (Spooks-stylie)
with the following entertaining results:
No. 1 - got shot out
No. 2 - the owners of the house got a "visit" with warnings to take the camera down - or else
No. 3 - the car got trashed with baseball bats, then finished off with a petrol bomb
Personally, I'm all in favour of 10-foot military-industrial chainlink fencing across this particular bridge, but some people think that might spoil the view...
In the meantime, keep an eye out for Charles R-W's "Accidental Angler" next Sunday 3rd. If it didn't hit the cutting-room floor, there's a good chance you'll see him helping us haul out a couple of motorbikes from precisely this stretch!
