Default 19.51lb trout,not on fly

This is the cover of an Irish magazine, I thought some folk here would like to see it, the trout was caught trolling on Corrib just before the season ended. I think the trout looks amazing and it has me climbing the walls now that the season is closed. Could be worse I suppose, I could have been the guy that caught a 25lb trout a few seasons ago that would have been a record only that the season was over a week and he had been pike fishing at the time.

Gourgeous ferox stylie, do you know if he released it, or was it another case of a trophy hunter.

I dont think it was released, they dont mention it in the magazine which is usually an indicator it was kept. To be honest I dont know if I would knock on the head too, I would have to make that decision on the spot. We released a nine pounder last year with both of us agreeing the fish was to beautiful not to go back, but a 19lb'er ? Hopefully I will get to make that decision one day.
If its on a six weight he's getting wacked sorry to say but on the troll I just dont know....

One indicator if a fish is still alive when being photographed, is the eye is usually looking down.

Thats one for the taxidermy man, as it would probably taste like ****.

Cant see the point in killing a fish like that, unless it was unable to recover after landing it.

Also his hand is under the gill plate - not sure that's the best way to hold a trout for a photograph. As Ryan says, if the fish is looking straight at you (pupil in middle of eye) then it is kaputt.

Default the eye downward

the eye looking downward is not always correct. I have taken thousands of photos of trout that were released and it only happens about half the time.

Hi Guys
The fish was killed. I know the guide he was out with and the fish was kept.
Its a shame to kill these great fish. Its not the first one this guy has caught and considering they get fish like this on the troll on a regular basis I think they should be returned. If a fly fisherman caught this fish then that would be a different thing as one of these giants on the fly is a real rarity and probably a once in a life time event. Trollers target these fish and catch a good few in a season so to catch one like this is not such a big thing as it would be to get it on the fly. Thankfully with the new laws they will only be able to kill one trout over 10lbs in any 24hr period from now on.
Tight lines
