Default The Tenacious Tiger Trout

What happens when you mix a Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) with a Brown Trout (Salmo trutta)? You get a different kind of beast...

Out here in Manitoba, Canada we have one lake where these tenacious felines prowl. They have attitude, they have teeth, and they crush flies.

My favorite way to entice these jungle kitties is to use topwater sliders and poppers made with packed deerhair. This presentation just seems to get under their skin and they strike to kill.

Here's some pics.

And come fall time they get all dressed up and the males are spectacular! They get the vibrant red from brookies mixed with the spawning colours of browns.

Any chance of seeing a pic of the flies as I've never heard of them.

Cheers eh.

Here's some of the flies we caught them on. We were casting up into cover (fallen trees, beaver lodges, etc) and with sharp strips, creating a loud popping sound. Also, you can trim the deerhair to a minnow head shape and it'll stay just below the surface for trout that are a little less aggressive.

I've found that this style also works wonders for big browns that are chasing forage fish close to shore. I believe the slider resembles a wounded baitfish that's just below the surface. I've taken many large browns on topwater presentations doing this.
