Default Answer

I was told that the lade flowing underneath is a drinking water supply, while the burn coming down off the hill originates from a rubbish tip and is contaminated (with what remains unknown). So, they built a bridge to carry the burn over the top of the lade and take it into the main river. I guess it is not contaminated enough to bother the river!

Funny when you see the gap top right, what happens when it rains? Stop drinking?

Ah yes, a gentleman's trout stream ..... these bridges were apparently designed to assist with the washing of one's boots on the way back to the big house

Cheers

You win the 10 points Mike, though, truth be told, it was largely on account of your not being put off posting a load of bull by the minor detail that the correct answer had already been posted

Col

PS: Your points are not redeemable at all major stores and outlets.
