They are come with a loop on the end so you can use loop-to-loop to connect them. Depending what they are made of and the taper they provide a smooth transition of energy to the tippet which translates into a nice turn over on the cast.
You can also make them float or sink and they are supple so good for drifting dries whilst minimising drag.

As I am just about to purchase some of Mr Trouts FL's for the first time are you suggesting by using a loop to loop conection that you make a loop using the fly line itself or do you attach the FL to a braided loop or a length of mono which has been attached to the fly line?

Just a little unclear as to what you meant, exactly.

Thanks
Dave

Just loop to loop with whatever the end of your flyline welded loop/braided loop etc
Mr trouts leaders are excellent, a couple treatments of mucilin and they float lovely.
