Default Photographing flies...

Jumped over here from the fly tying forum - may as well get full mileage from having both tied a fly and photographed it

Aye, it seems that use of fly clips is so last year. Free standing and high key seems to be the in-thing. I tried out a newish set-up. Was aiming at a white background - but being a low key sort of guy I couldn't bring myself to blow out my background completely and settled on a pale grey. I will have another go though - I'll just have to force myself - I'll have to switch off the highlight clipping warning for starters

Anyway, see what you think of this...

No holder, no shadows, no Photoshopping...

So, how was it done?

You have it suspended from the bit you missed at the top.

Shot sitting on a lightbox.

Forget the highlight clipping warning. First of all, it's very conservative. Second, it runs of the JPEG converted file - a RAW file will have another 2 stops of headroom. When you look at the (RAW file) histogramme it will be easy to see the "hump" of the background. Make sure that sits hard right else increase exposure.

That's what I thought or maybe John's right with the pane of glass.

What about Robs shots in the comp thread though? They don't have a white background, and there is no obvious bending of feather fibres to indicate the fly is sitting on glass. My bet is witchcraft.
