Nice glass, but they seem to have spelled "Nikon" incorrectly

Yeh, but at a price Col, Still looking at the 400mm though, i have seen some impresive shots taken with this lens (ie Detail etc) but would like the 500mm but would have to upgrade the camera also works out a hell of a lot of money

No good, eh?

How about this one, then?

f2.8

FM reviews show a lot of folk using it with a x2 extender to give them an 800 mm f5.6 - kind of defeats the purpose of having an f2.8... but then I suppose you have got an 800 mm f5.6. Not exactly cheap as chips either way.

Don't think any of these rigs are really hand-hold for a day out on the move affairs though, are they? That's where the likes of the 400 mm f5.6 comes in - it may be slow, but at least you can walk about with it.

I've had the 400mm 2.8 Nikon on loan and I seldom use it. It's simply too big for me as I never sit in hides. I have a couple of other lenses that I use instead. the 300mm f4 with or without a 1.4 teleconverter is excellent. There's very little difference in good light. I'll be honest and say that I can't tell the difference. I do like the idea of a built in T/C for the Canon 200-400 that would make a great sports lens.

New Canon 24-70mm lens announced.

"Ultimately, the most interesting thing about these launches is the fact that Canon feels the need to update various full-frame lenses, almost as if something likely to test the quality of its existing versions was in the offing." dpreview

And the new Nikon D800E (without the anti-aliasing filter) looks sweet.

Canon's announcement later his month could be very interesting...

I'll wait for a few months before deciding whether or not to upgrade my "big" camera (D700) to the D800/E. These massive increases in pixel counts don't always make for better images.

On point and shoot, yes. I'd say that 36Mp is about max on a full frame sensor. The removal of the anti-aliasing filter is good news for those prepared to process out moire manually. Much sharper images.

My 1Ds II may finally be staring down the barrel of an "upgrade" depending on what Canon announces later this month.

(The Canon G1 X looks like a fantastic coat pocket camera. I want to see a real head-to-head image test with the beautiful Fuji X100 though.)
