Default Advice on a new Compact digital camera.

Hi,
Looking at updating my Samsung NV10, which has served me well to something more up todate. I am considering staying with Samsung and getting a EX1, Only because of how the NV10 has served me. Looked at lots of others but starting to get confused as there are so many to consider. I am looking for a good all round compact for every day use, but with the capability to develop this interest. Any ideas or help would be great.

Cheers

Tony

I'm bumping this thread because I am also looking to buy a compact digital camera, which will be primarily used for snaps during fishing trips. Main criteria for me are:

1. small, like a medium sized mobile phone, so that I can carry it in a shirt pocket
2. easy to use one-handed
3. cheap (<£100) so that when, inevitably, I damage it, it won't hurt too much.
4. related to point 3, reasonably robust

I bought a Canon Ixus 105 last year after much deliberation like you. It's small enough to go in a shirt pocket easily, takes great pics (see this link for examples Cray Reservoir, Powys ) not only out and about but for taking close ups of the flies I've tied. It's a great camera if you are a point and shoot person. It gives some control but if you want more manual control then look elsewhere. I also accidentally dropped it into my local smallwatera few weeks ago and after fishing it out and giving it a few days in the airing cupboard it's working sweet as a nut. I think this model has been superseded by the 115 which offers HD video but I might be wrong. The Canon Ixus 130 costs a bit more, offers HD video and is smaller but I didn't want any smaller as things can get a bit too small and fiddly.

Anyway worth a look at the 105. I know I'm not the only one on here with one. Hope this helps. If you need to know more about this camera send me a pm.

Too late. Just sold my Pentax Optio WP on eBay yesterday - meets all of your criteria plus the huge benefit, for anglers, that it doesn't matter if you drop it in the water.

Sure you will find others on eBay. (Mine went for £36). It is only 5Mp but that is overkill anyway if all you want is images for viewing on a computer screen or printing to A4.

Just get one of the Olympus MJU series of digital cameras - Water & Shock Proof. Also produce some nice photos.

Toss in one more for consideration: Olympus Stylus Tuff 6020. Water proof down to 16 feet, shock proof from 5' feet 5x zoom, etc.

And takes excellent pictures. I consider that 'a plus.'

Another one for the consideration pot:
Kodak Sport. 5mp still images and several video modes including HD.
Camera is waterproof and can take pics and vids under water to a depth of 3 meters, 9-10ft. The size of a mobile phone, costs under £100.

I've taken a look at the suggested cameras:

Kodak Easyshare Sport: £49.26 for a waterproof 12mp camera!
But as you said 5mp I guess you meant the Kodak Playsport mini-camcorder for about £100. Problem with this one for me is that there is no flash.

Olympus Stylus Tuff 6020: £163 for a 14mp waterproof camera with 5x optical zoom! Nice, but too pricey for me.

Olympus MJU : quite a wide variety of these, with prices from £70 to £220 on Amazon. Too confusing.

Pentax Optio WP: sadly couldn't find one online, even on Ebay. Looks like a fantastic little camera.

Canon Ixus 110: my current compact digital is a Canon Ixus 65, so I know how good these little Canons are. Very tempted to get an Ixus 110 but I've had problems with the lens cover on the 65 getting clogged with dust so I'm a little wary.

Still looking, but that Kodak for 50 quid seems incredible value for money.

Olympus Mu, 850 SW 8, Megapixel Waterproof to 3m, and shock proof to over a 5ft, drop (Fall) and the photos are top quality.
