Default River Moy

From what I hear; I never fish the river even though I live only 4 miles away, the River Moy is having one of its biggest runs of salmon for years. After a number of years of poor runs, the past week has seen thousands of salmon running the river.

In the past week, up on 2000 salmon may have been caught. The fishery board had an open day for kids on one of the Ballina town beats and it took the 50 - 60 kids about 2 - 3 minutes to hook into a fish each. I only hope that the salmon anglers return some of their fish in the same way that brown trout anglers are returning a large number of the fish that they catch.

After some great sea trout fishing on the Moy and now a great run of salmon, lets hope that the local people will appreciate what a wonderful resource we have on our doorstep

Jungle Bunnry

The run may not be as great as it seems, all those fish will have been held back due to low water for months. No doubt they have been slaughtered in huge numbers from the weir in ballina to foxford and beyond.

Huge numbers will hold back well down the estuary as far as the concrete shipwreck in low water. I once counted 37 salmon below the bottom dock on the beleek side in a small run just as the tide turned. You are looking at the major part of the grilse run going heading upstream in a period of a day or two. The usual candidates off course have been selling them.

I SEEN ONE FISHERY OFFICER ON THE 4 MILES OF WATER I FISHED LAST WEEK, THE RIVER IS STUFFED FULL OF SALMON AND MORE WAITING TO COME INTO THE SYSTEM,
I HAD 17 SALMON IN ONE DAY, 43 FOR 4 DAYS FISHING, BIGGEST FISH 9LB AND ALL RETURNED ALIVE,

That is unreal Hobbe. It's an unbelievable river. I fish some rivers which wouldn't have returned the number of fish you caught in a month... I guess u were up foxford way?

I used to live within 200 metres of the moy but never had more than a couple of fish in a day... I used to fish the cathedral beat for 3 euros for an evening as a 'local' best value ive seen in ireland by a long shot.
Well done on your catch. unreal...

Cheers
JJ

200 metres you were miles away , I lived within 100 metres. When the grilse run after been held back catches can be unreal. As a young lad I caught and sold many Salmon - the Salmon ran a right gauntlet between the moy fishery nets and boxes, poaching from Bartra Island to Swinford and beyond never mind those with rods. Only for the sanctuary of Conn and Cullin the moy salmon would have been wiped out years ago.

The Northerners introduced prawn/shrimp fishing to the Moy back in the late seventies / early eighties - and they slaughtered huge numbers of fish. All you would hear would be " How much a pound are u getting, Jimmy". Many were out and out scumbags and resulted in a lot off the decent Northern Anglers in stopping from coming to the Moy and staying in the B&B's etc.

There is no excuse now for anyone to catch/kill and sell - and it aint only the lads on the dole that survived on selling salmon since they were kids that are doing it.

Given the declines in runs generally its a disgrace !!!!!

Not the easiest place to get on, there is a huge demand for the fishery there. Get the phone number for the fishery and ring them up to see what dates they have available. You probably won't get on at a peak time but if you go a few times then you can move up the pecking order as they say.

hi jj fished up in foxford, 2 days on mount falcon and 2 up above the falcon beat,
the river is full of fish and at one stage it looked like a giant river of boiling water such was the amounts of fish in the river,
the sad thing is that they were like mackerel for the slaughter, lots of them ended up in bags to be brought home, here on the east coast we have a strict catch and release program to encourage the future runs of salmon in numbers,
