Default Lough Derg

Yesterday saw the 10Th Giblin Cup held on Lough Derg. Unfortunately only 7 fish were returned for over 100 anglers. A fish of 2 1/2 lbs won the event. Hopefully soon we will see the first of the Mayfly hatch and fishing will improve.

Not just the Derg. I heard the Connacht Cup on Corrib last saturday returned only eight fish for sixty anglers. On the same day the 'Mies Cup' returned zero fish for two anglers Dour would be an understatement.

I once worked for a guy who owns an island on Derg. He and some freinds bought it a long time ago (60s ?). They have built a wooden one storey house on it. This can not be seen from any angle, surrounded by trees and very tall reeds.
Every year a man who lives on the shores rings a number in London as soon as he sees the Mayfly on the water. The group, no matter were they are in the world drop whatever they are doing immediately and head for Derg.
There they stay for 2-3 weeks. Some wives come with them and cook. Boxes of wine and whisky are ferried to the house and a jolly good time...
I gillied for them a few times. A certain Lord ........ton knocked the prop off the boat three times before he took the oars swearing and cursing and rowed me to port, a first for me lol.
They never caught much really.

Yes the fishing was not exactly hectic but it was a very good day all the same and was a bonus to catch a trout

It was indeed a good day, even if the fish you caught had a massive aversion to getting their picture taken with you

Was an excellent bit of craic but especially for me as my boatman showed me why we really need to wear protective glasses. To protect from the boat you are cutting across

Lovely flies you had on there Richard, well tied

Was great fun and the hospitality was second to none.

Already looking forward to next year.

Any chance of getting fish when the rhino is about is impossible, but the look in your fly box was worth it mate, what was that fly next to the red **** green peter,?? nice dressing, had the rhino gone a little slower i may have been able to pluck it from your box. great meeting you lads.

You don't believe that was the box with the "real" flies in do you ??? That would have been the "decoy" box

Good to meet you also
