Steelhead
Winter Steelhead season is just beginning in the Fraser Valley, on Boxing day ( Dec 26) we held our annual Vedder River Boxing Day Derby with over 400 registered particpants. A total of 14 steelhead were weighed in, largest was 13.8 lbs. Second place was taken by STS Guide Thomas Rutschman with a fish weighing 11.3 lbs.
Although the season is off to a slow start, the best fishing for steelhead is in late February through until mid April. For anglers visiting from over seas, you do not need to hire a guide for fly fishing the Vedder for Steelhead. The river is 100% accessible from shore with anglers walking and wading the river banks. We suggest you hire a guide for 1 or 2 days to show you the Hot Spots, then you can fish on yoru own. Our strategy is to fish early morning and late evening, taking the afternoon off while fishing pressure is at it's highest.
Winter trout fishing can also be good on the Fraser and Pitt rivers but to access these rivers you would require a boat. Most lakes are frozen over so not much for stillwater fishing available until ice off in mid April.
Sturgeon fishing is slow during winter months but by early March fishing can be quite good. Again you would probably hire a guide/boat to fish for sturgeon as access is limited without a boat. If you prefer to fish from shore with your own gear it is very difficult but can be done.

Hope you enjoy my report, wish I could make it longer for you but it is still early in the season.
Hope you all have Happy New Year.
