Default Icelandic river brownies

Do any of lads have first hand experience of brownie fishing in Iceland ?

Considering a trip in 2012 / 13.

I've had a few. fantastic fishing, but overshadowed somewhat by the salmon and sea-trout and char. That said, there are some lovely, clear rivers and big fish in them.

IBM,

I did some fishing on a budget a couple of years ago - pretty good value, although it wasn't a fishing holiday as such. You can buy the 'Fishing Card' for about £30 (cant remember how many Kronas) and it gives you access to some 30 odd lakes all around the Island. I caught some decent fish (browns and sea trout) in some of these lakes. I also fished, as a one-off, Lake Myvatn for browns and had around 10 fish to over 2lbs on a fleeting visit. The Laxa river which drains Myvatn is one of the best brown trout rivers on Iceland. I tried sea char fishing in the Eyjafjardara River (sp?) near Akureyri, cost about £35 for half day and had 6 sea run char to about 5lb - cracking sport.

It sounds like you are planning more of a dedicated fishing holiday? If so, you will have many more options at good value.

D

For sure , Dunbar , and I intend to completely ignore the salmon fishing side of things.
I'm interested in the river side of things, but for brownies only.

I have fished Iceland several times with a group of friends. 10 days DIY on a budget of 1250 euro per person (= 1000 GBP). That is everything included: flights (Brussels - Keflavik), 4x4 car hire, fuel, food and drinks, cabins, fishing licenses...

Salmon fishing

You can fish the famous salmon rivers if you have a big budget. You could catch up to 30 salmon per day, but it will cost you 10 000 euro for a week. Forget about the cheap salmon rivers. They will cost 200 euro per day or so, but chances are that you won't even see a fin if you go without a knowledgeable guide...

Be aware about 2 things:
  • Rod sharing is allowed (= 2 fishermen take turns while fishing a beat)
  • You can take a license on the lower part of a famous salmon river. The lower part is often called the "char beat". It is the easiest part and the salmon will race through it on their way up. Nevertheless it is possible to catch salmon in these pools as well. And lots of nice and strong sea-run arctic chars. And above all... it is cheap!

Brown trout fishing in the rivers

Actually, what I had posted here was not correct and I was asked to remove it completely. We have visited the river Minnivallalaekur but we did not fish there. I was badly informed by a local about the reason of the fishtanks. But Stjani has prooved to me that I was wrong and I believe him!

Brown trout and landlocked char fishing in the highlands

This is the best kept secret about Iceland. When you take the effort to hire a 4x4 and drive up to the highlands and do some hiking, then you will find countless lakes and creeks that connect them. These are full of wild brown trout and chars. And they are eager to take your fly. Why, because they do not know angling pressure. And the best thing is... IT IS REALLY CHEAP! Starting from 20 euro to 50 euro per person per day for cabin and fishing license.
