Default A 21lb Sea Trout, Gets The Rio Grande Season Well Underway!

This week we had 4 guests in the lodge, all old friends of ours, Axel and Christa from and Harrison and Lyn. They all had a great week. The season couldn’t have got off to a better start. The average number of fish per angler per day was 3.7, higher than any week of last season! We saw many fish showing and rolling in the pools, some seemed to be absolutely loaded with fish… now the conditions are more stable and the fish are starting to take our flies. We had some exceptional days, Axel caught 11 fish in one day and caught more than 40 fish in the week!

We still have a lots of small and medium sized fish but and the big ones are arriving. We caught 12 fish over 15 pounds and three in the 20+ class. All fresh, bright and very strong fish.

River Conditions: The river was perfect during the week. It dropped around 1 inch every day. It is an ideal height and very clear. We can wade all the pools and reach the best lies. The temperature of the water was perfect, between 10 and 11 degrees.

Fishing Techniques and flies: As the river was lower than last week, we were able to use lighter lines and longer leaders. Type 2/3 shooting heads and floating lines with sink tips were the most successful. We also used heavy and extra fast sinking lines in a few of the deeper and faster pools that we have here on the lower river. Regarding flies, the smaller ones were more successful, such the Prince nymph, wonder bug and rubber legs. We also used leeches in black, purple and chartreuse and of course the traditional tube flies such us Collie Dogs, Sunray Shadows and Temple Dogs are always a good option.

Fish:

We caught 66 fish and hooked 90 during the week.
Average fish per rod per day: 3.7.
Biggest fish: 21 pounds.
The average weight is 9.2 pounds.
We caught 12 fish over 15 lbs and 3 fish over 20 lbs during the week.
Biggest fish of the week was caught by Axel Wimmer.
