Default Kazakhstan

Has anyone fished in Kazakhstan, more particularly in Almaty? Would be interested to hear from you if you have as I'm possibly visiting Almaty in 2011 and considering taking a rod.

Cheers!

Andy

Wow, now there's an unusual destination! I'm sure you will find decent fishing near Almaty.

For some time now I've wanted to fish in Kyrgyzstan, and I note Almaty is right on the border... you might want to think about making the hop across the border if you have the time.

In fact, this website refers to a River Chu which flows from Kyrgyzstan into Kazakhstan - it might be more convenient for you than crossing the border:

If you do any fishing there, let us know how it went. All the best!

I spent 4 days in Almaty and thought it OK albeit I had to stay in some roach-motel up in the mountains as all the hotels in the City were booked out - that or the Client didnt like me

There were some intersting looking streams running down the mountain but I cannot comment whether they contained fish or not.

Sorry I cant have been more help.

Thanks Mr TTT, interesting link. I have some local contacts who are on the case, so although not actual anglers I'm hoping they can find out for me.
Ben, no roach ridden motel for me, I have the offer of an apartment to share with a fine looking and very nice local lady :-)

is it hard work obtaining a visa and all that guff?

Hey Andy

Your employer should be arranging your visa?

Otherwise, I would reccomend using an agency to deal with this for you unless you fancy queueing all morning for one

When I was there, they seem to recognise you as a 'Westerner' and you get hauled in to a side room whilst someone runs off and fetches your bag for you

The cars used over there are either top of the range Audia, Lexus, BMW etc or Ladas - two end's of the spectrum!

Horse meat is a bit of a local delicacy

Have fun and be careful.

Ben, ha ha it sounds awesome!

It's a personal trip so unless my boss is feeling particularly generous I'll need to sort it on my own. Is there a particular agency to use or do I just google and hope for the best?
Horse meat, mmm mmm........
