Hmm. By referring to my one book on the subject, it could be a stonefly of some kind (of a needlefly, willowfly, variety maybe?). If it had a couple of short tails below that long wing I'd be more certain.

Now the experts will be along to put me to shame.

A bit late for the Needle fly so I think it is the Willow Fly, Leuctra geniculata, which is around at this time.

I still say needle fly,and not to be argumentitive.the seasons havent been the same as normal this year.
if im wrong, im wrong. But does not a willow fly look a little like a mayfly shorter body and wings.?
My other reason for my choice is that the wings looked like they are rolled rather than flat which is a feature of the insect.

The Willow Fly (Leuctra geniculata) has a flight period of August through to November; females are 8-11 mm, males 7-9 mm.

The Needle Fly (Leuctra inermis) flight period is April through to August; females are 5-7mm, males 4-6 mm.

Despite the above, my experience is it's now a bit late for Needle Flies

Both the Needle Fly and Willow Fly are very similar in appearance, but size may help in the identification; then you need a decent magnifier to see the whorl of hairs around the apex of each antennae segment on the Willlow Fly that is not present on the Needle Fly.

OB.
