Default WTF...!!!

Rescued this guy yesterday as it spluttered and flapped its way across the surface.It looked like a large sedge from a distance and would be getting on for two inches in length.Reckon its a wood wasp or the hornet from hell....

It's a Wood Wasp.Harmless to humans. think that's the male as the female has a Oviposter(pointed stinger) 3-4 times longer for drilling into trees to lay it's eggs.
Sorry missed the oviposter 1st time round, it's a female

aye jimmy it be a wood wasp pretty firghtnin! but as mr grayling says harmless, this one swam the whole length of loch doine trying to hitch a ride on my float tube....a very good butterfly stroke too.Click the image to open in full size.
