Default What was the fly ?

On the river yesterday, witnessed a small number of flies coming off the river. ( I'm a complete novice at entomology, and for example can never understand what writers are on about in mags when they say they witnessed a small number of blue winged olives hatching followed by some spurwings etc - not an iota. Possible like a lot of anglers, i recognise large dark olives, smaller olive things, daddys and probably sedges, assuming the land on me.....thereforme my basic approach to fly choice is either Klinks ( olive black or tan ) , CDC olives, or Griffiths. Works well mostly but i'd love to know more.......

Anyway, this hatch consisted of yellowy olive things, that seemed to have 4 wings ....2 main ones, and two smaller ones. More yellow than olive.

Any ideas what they are?

The little sods never seem to float by me like they do in the mags, to be caught and inspected....instead they always seem airborn and unwilling to come too close to me ( must check the deodourant ) .

Cheers......

Yellow Sally, a stonefly, possibly.

And there was me thinking that they only exist in Ollie Edwards land.....Does a Yellow Sally have 4 wings, yes ?

That looks pretty accurate.....I might tie up a few more JT Olives with yellow thread rather than olive.....

Out of interest, do most flies that we see on the water have two smaller "hind" wings , or is this a Yellow Sally feature ?

Tks ....i'm learning !
