Default Today A Damsel Came To Lunch !!

Was down at the river today when I had a visitor come for lunch !!

I think it is a Banded Damsel ??? I had one land on the other hand earlier but it flew away as I was trying to get in close . Then this one landed and I tried again .
You will see it is having it's lunch !! When it first landed I could not see much of the it's dinner . As I was slowly getting in close for the pics ( holding my breath ) I watched as it manipulated the fly with it's jaws , took what it wanted from it and then spat out the rest and went on its way ............

These pics are in the order they were taken , I like the shot best that shows the whole damsel . I was lucky they came out not to bad as when I was taking them my nymphs has gone down stream and a roach was hooked and pulling on the end !!!

Anyway thought some might like to see this so here they are .............

What a great moment.
I bet you'll remember that visitor longer than the fish you caught.

(could you not have put your lighter next to it for scale?)

Hi Pom , Yes it was great to see , what a beautiful creature it is !! I was also very surprised it allowed me in so close with the camera , it was only between 50 and 100 mm away !!

As for the lighter ??? Oh silly me , I knew I was forgetting something

Cheers G , Yes it is nice down there , I loose hours just being there and getting lost in that world , looking about , poking about seeing whats what etc ...

Had a mink jump in next to me the other day , it had no idea I was there !! It was a shocked to see me as I was to it It jumped straight back out again and just stood staring at me from a tree trunk , was a little unnerving !! As I slowly moved for the camera it ran away , was a kinda relief but a shame I didn't get the pics ..

Yeah used to have same encounters with the mink when i fished the Blackwater at Augher,.....mink escaped from farm and were everywhere....even run over my legs one day and scared the bejasus out of me,..they dont back down to easy when you try to shooo them at close quarters either....watched them catching the trout and take young rabbits up and down the bank.Wish i had a camera about me in them days, still have the memories though.

That's a lovely male Banded Demoiselle. Much bigger than a damselfly, and a hell of a lot more classy looking. They have that lovely fluttering flight as well - more like a butterfly. Great predators like all the damselflies and dragonflies. Really unusual to get a good look at lunch! Great photo!
