Default Soldier Beetle

Can't remeber the Soldiers being this early for a long while... maybe it's just my memory? Anyway this one dropped in to say hello this morning... not the best light I'm afraid, but I grabbed the compact and did the best I could. He/she (?) posed nicely for me... probably still a bit slow from the chill of the night.

Hopefully there will be a few hundred thousand of them dropping onto our stillwaters in the coming weeks.... always good to see the trout going potty for these beauties.....

Nice one Rob! Great to see these beetles on the water, I find a cat's whisker a deadly imitation.

Tis the one! Bit of gink and rip it in, dry fly fishing at its traditional best.

P.S. I'm going up again tomorrow, not sure how that bloom is doing but catch returns seem well down.

Funny, I was just reading about the Soldier Beetle. Here's his cousin, the Sailor Beetle. Tons of these around yesterday.

YKIMS mate, YKIMS. Always done better with one of these in a soldier fall than with a soldier palmer. It has to be Glo-brite #6 though. Better tied with UNI red thread too.

Hi WB, I've found the choice of artificial not to be too critical.. If there's a good fall, then the trout usually get fixated, as with Mayfly, Heather fly, Hawthorns etc... and as with the aforemntioned the fish lose the plot too! Presentation first, then colour a close second... fiery browns and browny oranges do the trick.
One of my best patterns for a Slodier fall has always been a Fiery Shipmans buzzer with black breathers. Fiery/Ginger/Orangey Hoppers are another obvious choice, then Palmers in the same colours.
