Default Name of beetle

Can anyboby tell me the name of this beauty it was about an inch long and a fast runner......

Looks like the ground beetle Cychrus caraboides.

15-20mm

Convex, pear shaped body with very narrow head. Feeds on snails, plunging the narrow head into the shells while eating the flesh (nice). Mainly in woodlands, all year.

As a lover of all insects and arachnids, this is indeed a wonderful English beetle.

What ever has happened to the stag beetle? They were fairly common when I was a lad.

And I really miss the gorgeous beetles we used to get in Africa, the rhinocerus beetle being my favourite - 3 inches long with a huge horn.
