Default Long Legs ??

What's the deal with the Daddy Long Legs Is a Crane fly yes ?? Are there different types ??

The reason I ask is I thought they were an autumn thing ?? I am seeing loads of them at the moment though when out fishing and most of the ones I am seeing are Massive !!

Also do they all hatch out from underground or do some come from water ??

Sorry if I am seeming to be thick like but if you don't ask you never learn .....

Cheers for any answers

There are currently 4256 species of crane fly Tipulidae (though not all in the UK). The ones you're seeing now are not the ones you see in large numbers through early autumn. They hatch from a grub called a leatherjacket which lives in the ground, though some apparently do live in the water.

I have about 14,000 Tipulidae species worldwide with 318 in the British Isles.

Some are aquatic and some terrestial.

A couple of pictures from last weekend and this weekend.

A mating pair from last weekend, not sure of the species, possibly the same as below.

A single male of the Spotted Crane Fly (Nephrotoma appendiculata) I think, flies May-August.
