Default A swarm of grannom

This swarm of grannom was observed on a smolt trap on the River Ayr last week. This was at 9am in the morning.

A wee bit further downstream there was a mid stream part submerged boulder in a fast flowing, shallow gravelly section. The substrate next to the boulder was covered in thousands of greenish egg sacs. I presume that they are grannom eggs? I wonder if the bottom of the smolt trap will also be covered in eggs?

Has anyone else seen anything similar before?

Not seen anything like that I must admit. A question in a similar vein though. The few hatches I have seen thus far this season (buzzers and Hawthorns) have been really really big hatches. The largest I've seen in years. Could there be a connection to cold winter? Or any other reason? I'm interested to hear if anyone else has noticed significantly larger numbers of hatches (including terrestrials) so far this year?

Never seen that either so cant comment. I have seen the biggest March Brown hatch I have ever seen this year and a friend saw what he described as rafts of heather beetles on Lochindorb a few weeks ago. He has never seen the like in 20 years of fishing the place.
Thinking back I would say its not unusual to see very big hatches of a certain fly , heather fly last year, hawthorn and daddies the year before for example.

The flyhatches on the river was been great this year, the smolt run keeps going, the blossom on the trees is fantastic.....nothing wrong with a good hard winter. Nice to have the seasons back again.

Whereabouts in the Rivery Ayr was that?! I used to fish it when I lived in Ayr, as a lad, but never got further upstream than the A77.

A couple of weeks ago the sky was literally cloudy with buzzers hatched from Grafham. You could even hear them quite clearly. The water surface had a layer of spent cases as well.

You were an adventurous lad weren't you

It is in the river a few miles downstream of Mauchline, but the whole river river has had a great hatch of grannom this year, still going strong today.
