Default Hello and please can you help?

I have just joined this forum having been recommended it by a member of another forum. I am a wildlife and landscape photographer and have tried for nearly a year to identify this mayfly. I believe this is the forum to pose the question so can anyone help me please?

Thank you

I think Steve is right. It looks like a dun of Ephemera vulgata.

Here are the patterns found on the upper body surface of the 3 UK Mayfly species.

Hope that helps.

Thank you Steve, Sandy and OB.

It looks like my contact on the other forum was spot on - definately the place to ask

A special thanks to OB for the drawings - very useful

It is a relief that I am only looking for 3 types in the UK and now with the line drawings it will be a dream to ID. Makes a great change from some of the groups. True flies leave me in the cold although I am learning

Peter
I should have added that the markings are those found in the males; the females can a bit less consistent; see the example below.

My reference texts suggest that that there may be no markings in tergites 1 to 5 - especially in the females (and I think your photo is of a female); yet the female specimen from the Wye in my photograph shows no markings in tergites 1 to 6 (unless theres something wrong with my counting!).

Thank you for the compliment. I am no expert in wildlife but since starting out with the site last year I have learnt a lot - mainly through the generosity of various forums. This one now has become a favourite.
