Nice images, but not of an LDO, no way, not even of the Baetid family, not with those large hindwings.

I don't have my books with me but I'd say Ecdyonurus; probably E. insignis although late in the year for them.

I should have mentioned that the photo was taken around the end of September (sorry) it is probably a Oilve upright as they are the most common fly on the river and I have'nt come across any Ecdyonurus (Autum Dun, L Green Dun, L Brook Dun or Late March Brown) although as you can see I'm not too good at ID ing flies.

Another vote for a newly hatched E.dispar - the Autumn Dun and it looks like a he not a she; you can just see the claspers under the tip of the abdomen

Thanks for the help guys if it's a autumn Dun then that's another fly I can tick off for the R. Clwyd. I have had a check in pat O'Reilly's book Matching the hatch and it does say that they crawl out on to partly submerged stones I also noticed that J.R.Harris calls the a Ecdyonurus dispar the August Dun.

Hi', CS, As the lads say, it's a gent, answers to the name of either August or Autumn dun; and even if it were a lady, it would have had to go through the change to the spinner stage before laying its eggs. The female spinner is one of the Great Red Spinners. Cheers, Jada
