Default Freshwater shrimp habitat

Can somebody please confirm the prefered shrimp habitat. I understand good water quality is essential along with fast running water but do they cope with typical acidity levels found on granite strewn peaty moorland spate rivers.

I have never heard of anyone fishing freshwater shrip on Dartmoor - I have used them once on high coloured water with some limited success.

The pattern looks very similar to that of teh czech nymph - what is the difference or is the term czech nymph really describing a style of fishing rather than the 'bug'?

We have an abundance of shrimp in our chalkstream. It's considered an indicator species for water quality which would suggest it needs clean, clear and oxygenated water.

I often use a shrimp pattern when sight nymphing and find it a very productive pattern. The only difference I can see between a Czech Nymph and a freshwater shrimp is that the shrimp tends to be a bit bulkier while a Czech Nymph is tied to be slim but that may be due to the tier rather than a difference in pattern. Biggest difference would be the way it's fished but at the end of the day you can fish any heavily weighed nymph Czech style/High Sticking.

Take care

Terry

I would say that the acidic headwaters on Dartmoor would be devoid of Gammarus although there may be good numbers further downstream. Gammarids figure highly in the diet of salmon parr. "Fast running water" isn't really a requirement as G. pulex will thrive in lakes and ponds, estuaries too.

That's very interesting (well to me anyway )... The little success I have had so far was up in the salmon parr territory (and that is what was taking) of the East Dart. High coloured water and 'high sticking' the shrimp patterns from a boulder where I could sit mid stream.

I too think it is too acidic... However I shall persit an report back
