To be honest, were you to buy only one, I would pass on the one above in favour of Goddard's Waterside Guide.

I had the Match the Hatch book mentioned above and very good I found it too. However, I then bought Match the Hatch pocket guide by Peter Lapsley & Cyril Bennet. Same title but very different. I prefer the latter, neat, fits in the pocket. Very informative and well laid out. It is my constant companion on the bank. Got a bit of an offer on Amazon at the mo 5.39 posted .

Chris.

I found that are both very good and go hand in hand. The pocket book puts things in such simple terms, the other title is great bedside reading to try and sort out whatswhat of the insect world....

It isn't easy is it

I also bought both, and like Dartmoor Navigator, I think they are complimentary. I certainly enjoyed them both and found both useful. I agree O'Reilly's book is more enjoyable to read whereas Lapsley/Bennet's is a handier reference... it also has a useful bit at the back on the rise forms of trout. I wouldn't give either away!

I like Match the Hatch too, from a beginners point of view Brian Clarkes "The pursuit of stillwater trout" ticks my boxes as well; very user friendly and really explains the basics well
