Heather Fly, "Red Legs" or Bibio Pomonae, take your pick!

I haven't seen a single one this year, there are usually quite a few near the heather on our club reservoir.

Up untill last weekend I hadnt seen one this year either. Some years they dont seem to appear at all.Up my way the big falls seem to coincide with a long settled spell of hot dry weather......that could explain why I dont see them that often....

I only took one or two of these Darwin, lots of thistles to wade thru and only wearing shorts, so not a good combination. Although I did take about 50 shots of a peregrine perched on a stick and only 40 feet away and it was as still as the post it was perched on. I watched it for a good half hour clicking away and sure to get that perfect shot, then I whistled so it would hopefully take flight and I'd get that ace takeoff shot, but no it stayed dead still. So here's me perched on top of a wall whistling away and ready with the camera but nothing happened. So I decided to have a look at the shots I'd just captured and there was something not quite right. Anyway I decided I would approach it ready with the camera to get it as it took off, now within 10 feet of it I could tell there was definitely something amiss, it was,,,,, it was made of plastic damnit I shouted and a few other unchoice expletives...but it looked so lifelike. Then about 10 feet away from me something moved in a grouse butt and from the most amazing camouflage I had ever seen, popped a head, it was a guy who was out shooting crows with a peregrine decoy and had been so well hidden I could have stepped on him and not known. I explained to him that I hadn't just escaped from a lunatic asylum for twitchers and that I felt rather stupid having just wasted a good half hour capturing the inanimate behaviour of a plastic falcon.....what a goon. I imagined what he'd be saying down the local this evening to rapturous laffs at my expense...
