Default Guess who!

Anyone care to have a stab at this little fellow's identity? I'll give you a clue - it's not the most widespread species around (although I seem to see more and more of them on my local rivers every year)......odd ones and twos coming off all this evening.

Large Green Dun Ecdyonurus insignis ? but I still think the coloration is more like an Autumn Dun Ecdyonurus dispar (no clear patch in wing)

Gotcha - well done squire! The spinners of these are one of the bonniest flies around with a black leading edge to the forewings and the distinct diagonal banding of the sides of the abdomen (our little friend's rear femur is obscuring in the photo above), becoming more marked in the adult.

Supposedly rare, but they crop up on the Eden and Ribble often enough, albeit in small numbers.

Nice picture, Matt,
For the benefit of the other lads, of the four big ecdyonurid species, the Large Green is the only one which keeps true to its colour on becoming an imago. The False March Brown, Large Brook Dun and Autumn Dun are generally termed Great Red Spinners, of which, the Autumn Dun imago is the most numerous in our area, and probably the only one really worth bothering about copying. It is a favourite of Dr Malcolm Greenhalgh, a friend, who recommends fishing the artificial. Just a generalisation. Cheers, Jada
