Some time ago A freind of mine brought me over this monster I did some research and got some information any one any ideasClick the image to open in full size. Click the image to open in full size. s

Looks like one of the Ichneumons.

Looking through my book it might be Pimpla hypochondriaca.

I did some research on this myself and found it to be an African wood wasp it came into the country in furniture that was shipped here it is a danger to the forestry industry as it burrows into the trees and does damage due to some sort of fungal infection.
it has done serious damage in some countrys.
Please correct me if I am wrong . thanks for the reply

It's a female Sirex noctilio.

Canadian Food Inspection Agency - Pest Information - Sirex noctilio (Fabricius) - Sirex woodwasp

So you seem to be correct in your I.D.

I find this an interesting thread, I used to think that a fly was a fly and a beetle was a beetle etc, until I looked into this thread, we have some very knowledgable members on the forum, it certainly brings a different dimension to matching the hatch.
