Default Caddis or caenis

Seen some tiny flies out in the back garden today, about 2-3mm.

They were a pale cream colour and had low swept back wings. However when viewed from the top the wings didn't lie on top of each other, slightly spread, like an elongated heart shape.

Sorry I don't have pics, couldn't focus them on my digi cam.

Thanks
AL

If its any help, theres a canal 40yrds from our house, don't think the flies came from there tho as its is brackish and is semi tidal

2-3 mm?
The only sedge belong to "Hydroptilidae Family" (7 genera, 31 species), still or running water, April-September. Generally known as Micro Caddis. They have long fringes on the wings looking more like micro moths. Often run around like ants on waterside vegetation or walls rather than flying.
Hydroptila Sparsa, 2.5-3.5 mm is a typical micro caddis.

I think same as sweenytodd. Midge.

You are describing flies almost certainly from the family Psychodidae. Some of which bite...

Try an image search on Google for Psychodidae, common name Moth or Drain flies. They can appear quite hairy hence the Moth name, especially when you look at their antennae.
