Ahh, spiders, I would have been somewhere in Dublin befroe I'd have stopped running after touching that thing, they don't annoy me on screen but scare the bejeebers out of me in real life

Lucky Bleeder seeing that, a genuine Dolomedes fimbroides, we used to get them in eastanglia, but they are rare and threatened due to habitat loss, dont even think about killing them even if they are quite frightening if you have arachnaphobia, lucky bleeder, easker1

Yes I knew I was lucky and knew it was something a bit special , don't worry I love and respect all nature and would never kill something just because it frightens the living **** out of me

Yes I know about them in East Anglia , I often tried to see them at the nature reserve at Redgrave Fen , they have their own little section there with pools and a board walk for people to try and see them , never did see one though ..

Cheers .

Thanks for those pictures ST, I wasn't aware that Raft Spiders existed prior to your posting, very interesting.

They have a dedicated web site which gives a very thorough overview of the species, definitely worth a look - link

The site administrator's asking anyone who's found a population of Dolomedes plantarius to contact them with photos, site location etc., they'd be pleased to hear from you.

There are some good macro shots of the spider on the FM forum -

This photographic community make you feel like binning your camera when you see the work they knock out, the macro section of the forum's particularlly intimidating...... the level of sophistication of some of their gear is phenomenal. This kit, designed for photographing subjects in flight made me realise that I'm operating in the photographic equivalent of the Stone Age!

There are three colonies of plantarius locally to me in a local reserve but they are bloody hard to see , Near my school in the 50's I used to see them now and again , I think there may be a you tube shot of one catching a stickleback
