Default Water Butt Olive

I've just seen this little fella floating around in my garden water butt. There were a few fresh empty olive shucks in there as well, so it is definitely from here. I've only ever seen midges in there before.

Could it be a Pond olive?? The body length was about 8-9mm.

Hi Mike

I think this Olive is the type known as the Olive Upright due to the pale body.
The next nearest Olive is the Pond Olive but the body is more brown than your photo.

Of course I could be wrong I've just used my identifier book.

Cheers BK

I'm no expert, or even mildly competant, but looked up olive upright and it has large secondary wings, where mine has none (or very small). The OU tails also have solid colouring, whereas my fly had rings on it.

Rithrogena semicolorata - Olive Upright - an Illustrated Guide

Also says the nymph is a stone clinger in running water which doesn't quite fit, though the kids do keep chucking gravel in there!

So I'm still sticking with the Pond olive (for the moment)

Despite me telling them repeatedly not too, my kids keep drinking this water!!!! It's disgusting!!!!!

Nice image squeeks - enlarges well.

The absence of hind wings indicates Cloeon probably Cloeon dipterum - the only 'live birth' upwing.

Thanks E, that looks like a very good match :-)

found this on wikipedia . .
"The larvae can survive for months in anoxic conditions, an adaptation which is necessary to survive the winter in ponds which freeze over and therefore contain little dissolved oxygen.[7] In captivity, adult females have been kept alive for up to three weeks.[8]"

which makes sense as the water in the butt must have been almost frozen solid this winter - hardy little b*ggers!!

Hi' squeeks, If you have a spare, possible, female pond olive to hand, keep one captive until it changes into a spinner. It should provide you with one of the bonniest, which is Apricot Spinner. Cheers, ja

Cheers Jada, I'll keep an eye out for them. I've just checked again now and there are about 10 empty shucks floating around, so quite a significant hatch considering

Thanks Paddy, all I did was point and shoot, and my camera (panasonic DMC-TZ7) did all the hard work in auto mode. Though I did specially modify it last year . . . by dipping it in the River Eden
