Here’s a close- up of a Large Brook Dun,
Ecdyonurus torrentis resting on the flower of Lords and Ladies,
Arum maculatum growing on the banks of the Taff at Radyr
I went to take this shot to catch the way the light was hitting the flower but then noticed the fly.
Looking up the common name of this plant to check whether I’d correctly identified it was interesting, I’d heard that it’s known as Cuckoo Pint (pronounced as in “mint” apparently) but didn’t realise that this was an edited version of the older name Priest’s Pint which means “Priest’s Prick”. The same sanitising exercise changed the name of the bird we know as the Wheatear from the more descriptive name “White Arse”. This is where my time goes......
Unfortunately one of the tails parted company with the fly on the trip home
The characteristic indentifying feature of the LBD, the unpatterned terracotta underside of the sub imago. It's easy to see why hopper patterns are the best way to match the hatch -
This shot shows the banding on the wings, another identifying feature of the LBD more plainly -
