Default Fly identification please.

Not a great pic but saw a lot of these to-day .I tried PT's and march brown spiders but they were having none of it.

Looks like a march brown but it could be a large brook dun

Yep, no doot an LBD, good photo there corky, it catches the characteristic yellow colouration of the wing nicely.

A fly that I've found to work really well with hatches of LBDs is the hopper, more commonly used on reservoirs of course but it describes a nice gangly footprint on the surface of a river too.

Possibly Large Green Dun. Could be a large Brook dun or Late March Brown as well if you have a picture of the underside of the body I could tell.

I can't see the diagnostic dark patch on the femur which is diagnostic of the March Brown.

Corky,

The 4 species: Large Brook Dun, Large Green Dun, March Brown and Late March Brown are very difficult to tell apart from a photograph.

The sizes are almost identical, the colours may be slightly different but the exposure on a photograph can accent one colour rather than another so even a pro entomologist can struggle.

I ruled out March Brown as it has a diagnostic dark patch on the femur but any of the others wouldn't surprise me. I thought it was a large green dun as the pattern of alternating spots and stripes on the segments of the fly is not usual with a LBD and it seemed too light to be a late March Brown - but as I said earlier I don't trust pictures for accurate colour representation.

Fair point, although the sizes aren't quite identical, but 14mm versus 16mm could be deemed splitting hairs.
For me the yellow tinge to the wing leading edge is typical L.D.O.

Other factors are time of year and geographical location, some Ephemeroptera species for example are completely absent from Ireland, others are localized in distribution. So historical records and maps are useful.
BTW Where was the photo taken corky?
